Introducing our newest March campaign: “Like a B”.
For Women’s + B Corp Month, we wanted to do something different. What started as a love of double entendres and ‘cheeky’ marketing quickly turned into a passion project. So, if you’ve ever been called the ‘B’ word, we think it’s about time to reclaim the term.
What is a B-Corp?
Certified B Corp = Certified Better Corporation
If you’ve seen this term everywhere but have no idea what it means (or why it’s a good thing), we’re here to break it down for you. If you already know, feel free to skip this section.
Let’s B-reak it down:
-
A for-profit company that is certified by the nonprofit B Lab for meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
-
Being a B Corp is synonymous with being purpose-driven. Our aim is to create a business that considers the impact on employees, communities, and the environment.
-
Trust us—achieving this certification is no easy feat. It takes hours of work and teamwork to complete the B Impact Assessment. Areas measured include governance, workers, community, environmental impact and customer care.
-
Recertification is required every three years.
Women Founded B Corps
In North America, 25% of B Corps are women-owned, with that number steadily growing.
-
A Harvard study found that women entrepreneurs are more likely to create businesses with a social impact focus, benefiting communities and society as a whole.
-
The World Economic Forum found that women-led enterprises help reduce poverty, drive job creation, spark innovation, and contribute to more environmentally friendly communities.
Herbaland’s Story
Co-founded by our CEO, Aisha Yang, in 2009, Herbaland has been continuously working to implement new sustainability practices that benefit both the environment and communities. Nearly three years ago, we undertook the rigorous process of becoming B Corp certified—a challenging but rewarding journey.
Along the way, we met incredible women-led B Corps that reinforced the importance of women in business. So, without further ado, we’d love to introduce you to some of the inspiring women-led B Corps that motivate us.
Deebee’s Organics
Similar to Herbaland, DeeBee’s was founded by a Mom on a mission to find healthier solutions for her family. Dr. Dionne Laslo-Baker launched the company in 2013, offering sweet treats made from organic fruit. From their iconic freezie pops to their latest launch, Dip’ems, DeeBee’s is a perfect example of how women are shaping the B Corp movement.
Beyond being absolutely delicious and B Corp certified, their factories run on solar power, and they invest in causes their employees care about through their incredible DreamLauncher program.
Loulou Lollipop
Next up on our list is Loulou Lollipop. Founded by Angel Kho and Eleanor Lee in 2015, this brand isn’t just a certified B Corp—it’s also shaping the sustainability movement through its baby accessory line.
If you know anything about Loulou Lollipop, it’s that their mission goes beyond creating fantastic products (which they absolutely do!). They’re deeply committed to making a positive impact by prioritizing the well-being of both people and the planet.
Sheertex
Another Made-in-Canada business you’ve likely seen all over the internet is Sheertex. Founded by Katherine Homuth in 2017, the brand started after she raised enough funding through Kickstarter and an angel investor (hallelujah!). She then launched her now-iconic line of ultra-durable tights.
Not only does Katherine create a product that’s 10 times more durable than the average pair of tights, but she’s also earned major accolades—her brand holds the title of the #1 bestselling tights in the U.S., and she was named one of Canada’s most powerful women.
All products are shipped from Montreal, so if you’re looking to support a local, female-run business, Sheertex is definitely one to check out.
Conclusion
There are so many other incredible female-run B Corps out there, and March is the perfect time to discover and support them.
From all of us at Herbaland, we wish you a Happy Women’s + B Corp Month!
